Since they first met in 2010, Robert and Demetrius have done quite a bit of everything together. The two continue to discover new ways to bond and develop, from an early fishing excursion to exploring college campuses. Robert has remained a constant presence in his mentee's life, offering Demetrius direction and reliability. However, the effects are reciprocal; Robert points out that his friendship with Demetrius has allowed him to develop and gain an understanding of how young people perceive the world. Demetrius graduated from high school in the spring of 2015 and was offered admission to two colleges and three community colleges. When they were originally matched, Demetrius inquired about Robert's intended stay in the world. Robert's response was brief and logical, saying he wanted to stay like this for the rest of his life.
This is a real case coming from the runner-up in the 2015 Cabot Creamery Cooperative & MENTOR’s National Mentoring Story Contest.
